The West Indies are a chain of about 1000 islands in the Caribbean Sea. The original inhabitants of the West Indies were Arawak and Carib Indians, but the present population consists of descendants of European settlers, African slaves and Asian Indians.

Caribbean music has both Iberian and African characteristics, such as call-and-response singing, polyrhythms, extensive use of persistently repeated musical figures and improvisation based on recurring short phrases.

Instruments are primarily percussion, found in unaltered and adapted forms, with many regional names and variations.
